Sandburg Women Drop Back-and-Forth Battle With Kankakee

Kankakee came out on top in a back-and-forth contest with the Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team Saturday afternoon, defeating the Chargers 61-57 at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.
The game had three ties and 17 lead changes, with nine of those lead swaps taking place in the final 5 minutes, 40 seconds. The loss snapped a three-game win streak for the Chargers (10-13).
KEY MOMENTS
- The Chargers took their last lead with 1:11 to play on a second-chance basket by sophomore forward Kennedy Jackson (Peoria, Ill./Limestone), but the Cavaliers (17-6) scored the game’s final five points. Brandi Hudson’s drive down the left side of the line with :46 to go proved to be the game-winner, and Kankakee hit 3 of 4 free throws in the final :16.
- Kankakee took a 31-26 lead into halftime, thanks in part to a 10-0 run in the second quarter that put the Cavaliers ahead 24-19.
- The Chargers strung together a 9-0 run to begin the second half to go up 35-31, with Jackson scoring the first seven points of the stretch.
SANDBURG STANDOUT
Jackson had 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists to lead the Chargers in all three categories. The sophomore hit 8 of her 11 shots from the floor, including her lone 3-point attempt.
OTHER TOP CHARGERS
- Sophomore guard Hailey Lovetinsky (Overland Park, Kan./Spring Hill) hit 7 of 14 from the field and scored 16 points.
FOR THE CAVALIERS
- Brandi Hudson 23 points, nine rebounds, three steals, two assists, two blocks
- Kierra Williamson 11 points, five rebounds
UP NEXT FOR SANDBURG
5:30 p.m. Thursday vs. Sauk Valley, which is tied with the Chargers and Black Hawk atop the Arrowhead Conference at 3-1.
